Silvia is located a few hours south of Cali and on Tuesdays plays host to one of the most authentic markets in the Andes. It’s only recently becoming popular with tourists who come to see the market and the beautiful indigenous Guambino people in the beautiful Switzerland like mountain setting. The Guambino dress very distinctively in beautiful blue ponchos, skirts (for women and men), and black felt bowler hats. The only sign of western influence is their love for Timberland boots, which everyone seemed to be wearing. In the market you’ll find cheap vegetables, blocks of cane sugar “toffee”, tools, clothes and all sorts of other practical goods and supplies the Guambino need. There is very little directed to tourists. We spent Monday night in town, which is recommended as you can be at the market first thing in the morning and take it all in before buses with tourists arrive later in the morning. The locals don’t appreciate being photographed, so most of the pics are shot from the hip.
