Our jumping off point from Mexico to Guatemala was the excellent Lagos de Colon. It’s a natural waterpark popular with locals that also features some Mayan ruins. We arrived late, and were searching for a spot to park in the dark when we passed a small guesthouse on the road. A friendly looking gentleman waved to us enthusiastically and offered us to stay there for a few dollars. We thought “why not”. So we squeezed the camper in next to the guesthouse. It turned out to be a golden find. Luis and his partner Ruby showed us rare hospitality and treated us like family. Behind the house is a short staircase that leads to pristine lagoon, fantastic for swimming and complete with little fish that nibble off dry skin if you stand still for long enough. Luis even took us for a tour of the lagoons farther back, as well as to the waterpark. He showed us a cave behind the waterfall we never would have found on our own. He asked for nothing in return other than that we spread the word, and we are more than happy to do so!
If you’re traveling to Lagos de Colon, Chiapas we highly recommend staying at Ruby’s place. The guesthouse is beautiful and clean, although basic. They can also accommodate overlanders and camping. You’ll see it on your right before you enter the park.
