Culture and Climbing in Hatun Machay

April 23rd-24th, 2016

The fascinating rock gardens of Hatun Machay are home to some of the best sport climbing in Peru. At 4600m, it’s one of the highest crags in the world and we were definitely feeling the altitude. Located nearby is the Refugio, which services the climbing area. It’s filled with climbers young and old from all over the world and has a cozy, sociable atmosphere for which no Canadian counterpart exists. Thanks to an epic effort by the camper ascending the high dirt road to the refuge we spent 2 days there climbing and taking in the local culture and traditions, making some new friends in the process. I’ll let the pictures do the rest of the talking.
